NightScape Room divider made of charred wood and silver leaf
Burning wood to make a charred texture is a traditional technique developed in Japan and other parts of the world. Depending on the kind of wood and the length of exposure to the burning process, it brings unique jet black texture on the wood surface which is only possible by burning.
Using the most common 2×4 lumber, this room divider explores the light and shadow effect of charred wood and silver leaf applied on the surface to create a dynamic visual effect in space.
Long and short pieces are stacked up in units and the zig-zag formation creates the freestanding panels.
The short pieces rotate individually to change the amount of transparency of the panels as well as reveal the silver leafed side in an either geometric way or randomly composed pattern.
The multiplication of units can be of any width horizontally and the height of the divider can also be determined based on the repetition of units vertically according to the spatial needs.
The light and shadow pattern imbedded within the surface of the charred texture, as well as the reflection of light on the silver, leafed side either from the natural light during the day or lighting fixture at night, give this free standing object an ever-changing presence in space.
